Fit Activate — Training that fits you

An online fitness coach or a personal trainer: which one do you actually need?

By Anubhav··5 min read

Almost every intro call we have includes a version of the same question. Usually it is put to us like this: “is online coaching really as good as having someone there with me?”

It is a great question, and the honest answer is that it depends on you. Both work, and both work well. They simply suit different people, and different moments in someone’s training. So rather than tell you which is better, let us help you work out whether an online fitness coach or a personal trainer fits where you are right now.

Where the real difference is

People sometimes assume that with a personal trainer you turn up and get put through a session, and that the planning only really happens in online coaching. In our experience that is not the case at all.

Good in-person trainers programme carefully. They think about progression, about what your body is ready for, and about how this week builds on the last. That is skilled work and it deserves credit. So the planning is not what separates the two approaches.

The differences that actually matter are a little narrower, and much more useful to know about.

Both approaches handle a disrupted week, they just adjust different things. A trainer moves the appointment. A coach moves the training itself.

Who online fitness coaching suits best

In our experience it works beautifully for people who already know the value of training. You do not need convincing that it matters. You have done it before, or you are doing it now in some form.

What tends to be missing is not enthusiasm. It is direction and accountability. Someone deciding what comes next so you are not guessing, and someone who notices when you go quiet for ten days and checks in.

If that sounds familiar, online coaching will probably serve you well, because the thing holding you back is not what happens during the hour. It is everything around it.

When working with someone in person is the better fit

There are situations where we would happily point you towards a trainer near you instead.

  • You have never been taught the movements. If you have genuinely never had a barbell on your back, a few weeks with someone next to you is the quickest way to learn safely. Video review is useful, though it is not quite as fast as a hand on your hip telling you to sit back.
  • The appointment is what gets you there. This is worth being honest with yourself about. If a slot in the diary is what makes it happen, then that is exactly what you should buy, and there is nothing wrong with knowing that about yourself.
  • You are working around an injury or a diagnosed condition. That deserves someone assessing you in person, and usually a physiotherapist first. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy keeps a register of qualified physiotherapists if you would like a starting point.
  • You would rather not train alone. Some people thrive on the company, and that is a completely valid reason to choose in person.

If any of those sound like you, working with someone in person is likely the better fit right now, and we would encourage it. We would far rather help you find the right thing for where you are than have you start something that is not quite the match. And if that changes further down the line, we will still be here.

What online coaching cannot do

We are not in the room watching your fifth rep start to fall apart. That is a genuine limitation, and no amount of technology closes it completely.

What we do is narrow that gap deliberately:

  • You film your working sets and we review them and send corrections back. Slower than a live cue, though you do get to rewatch it, which you cannot do with something called out mid set.
  • Your training is logged where we can see it. We use TrainingPeaks, so we can see what you lifted, what you skipped and how hard it felt, rather than asking you to remember it on a call.
  • We stay in contact through the week, not just for one hour of it. WhatsApp for the questions that come up on a Tuesday, and a monthly call to look at the whole block properly.

That narrows the gap considerably. It does not erase it, and we would rather say so. For someone brand new it may not be enough yet. For someone who has trained before, it usually is.

Two questions that usually settle it

  1. Do you know what to do when you walk into the gym? If you genuinely do not, and nobody has ever shown you, start with someone in person. If you broadly know but have no plan, that is a coaching question rather than a supervision one.
  2. Does your week look the same every week? If it does, a standing appointment can work beautifully. If it does not, that appointment tends to be the first thing to go, and a plan that moves with you will last longer.

The same two questions, drawn out. Most people land somewhere within about thirty seconds.

Know roughly what you are doing, with an unpredictable week? Online coaching is very likely your answer. Not sure where to start, with Tuesdays you can protect? A trainer near you is a great place to begin.

How we work, so you can judge it for yourself

So you can hold this up against anyone else you are considering, here is our setup plainly.

Fit Activate is the two of us, brothers and online fitness coaches, and we have been coaching since 2020. Anubhav is based in Dubai and Anuj is in London, and we coach people online wherever they are. Anuj is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer, accredited by the American Council on Exercise.

Coaching runs in three month blocks, because that is about the shortest honest window in which a plan compounds rather than restarts. You get a programme built around your goals, your schedule and the equipment you actually have, support through the week, and a monthly one to one call to review the block together and decide what changes next.

You can see exactly what is included on our coaching page if you would like the detail.

Still weighing it up?

That is genuinely what the intro call is for. If working with someone in person is the better answer for you, we will say so, and you will still come away knowing what to look for in a trainer.
